Beards Drilling recently completed a spillway anchoring project at Paluma Dam, also known as Paluma Lake. Located in the World Heritage-listed rainforests of northern Queensland, this dam provides up to 50 megalitres of water per day to Townsville through a gravity-fed system.

The spillway anchoring project required specialised drilling equipment. This equipment was chosen for its ability to work at unique angles in the challenging terrain. It allowed our team to reinforce the spillway while ensuring Townsville’s water supply remained unaffected.

Before proceeding with anchor installation, Beards Drilling conducted geotechnical drilling. This was essential to assess the foundation’s stability and determine areas needing reinforcement. By collecting soil and rock samples, we gathered crucial data to guide the anchor placement.

After the assessment, our team installed ground anchors using advanced drilling equipment. These anchors reinforced the spillway’s ‘Ogee weir’ structure, ensuring its long-term stability. Low water levels allowed us to work efficiently, completing the installation without disrupting dam operations.

Thanks to careful planning and advanced drilling techniques, Beards Drilling successfully reinforced the spillway. This ensured the continued reliability of Townsville’s water supply. We also preserved the integrity of the surrounding ecosystem.
